Couples Counselling
Working with you and your relationships
A space for both of you
Life throws lots at us and that can throw us and our relationships off balance. It can also be the relationship itself that has gone off track. Very often, it is both of these factors which can bring couples into therapy. That is a brave decision - to allow a third person into your relationship but it is a powerful step towards helping to improve your dynamics.
In my role as couples therapist, I will work with you and your partner to listen fully to both of your perspectives and support you in hearing each other. We will then work together on the challenges that you both experience.
Exercises and tools
In the course of the work, I offer exercises and conversations for you to explore the two of you as individuals, your beliefs, values and the family scripts that you have brought to your shared relationship. Having a fuller understanding of these as well as your past histories, can help you both to appreciate each other better. From this position of greater compassion, you can decide together what messages from the past you want to welcome into your current relationship and which you want to say goodbye to. Your relationship is your relationship. Of course it will change over time but having this opportunity to decentre and consider it together, you can make some new choices and changes over how it will be in the present.
We will also consider your shared history - who you are as a couple and what sort of relationship you have created together, what are its strengths and what are the areas still to work on and improve.
The dynamics of the relationship are also put under the microscope - how do you work or don't work together? There may be problems around communications, roles and tasks, intimacy and trust, boundaries or different parenting styles. We can consider together how compromise and consensus can be developed and supported alongside allowing space for feelings of both of you to be realised.
My training and experiences
I hold a Certificate in Couples Therapy and am undertaking further training in Relationship and Psychosexual Therapies in 2025 and 2026. I have also had the benefit of much support though couples therapy in my own relationship.
I consider it an immense honour to work with couples and pairs (as I work with family members too). I have worked with partners of different ages, cultures, sexualities, disabilities and through many life stages. To be invited into people's relationships, experience them from the inside and to try and support them in navigating difficulties is both challenging and immensely rewarding.
What couples say...
'Lisa was very thorough in how she approached our particular situation. She helped us find a way to communicating better and we are in a far better place. She gave us the confidence to speak openly and honestly, and it has transformed the way we feel about each other.
We will continue to speak openly to each other and remind ourselves that any criticism or strong words come from a good place. We remind ourselves of some of the tasks Lisa set us if we need to go back to basics. We feel far more confident in communicating freely without the fear of upsetting the other person.'
'I feel much more willing to have conversations now that I would have avoided because I was afraid. I feel more able to let my partner know when I am overwhelmed and unable to take anything more on board. I was living with a heavy sense of doom; I can see more often now that this was an interpretative point of view, not fact.'
'I felt that voicing issues out to my partner in the presence of the counsellor gave me and my partner a sense of reassurance that the downs (and ups) that we are going through in life, is most of the time, completely normal.
I started the sessions with an ambivalent desire to start a family with children. Today, I feel optimistic and hopeful about our hopes of having a child one day. It now feels a lot less like I would have to give up a large chunk of my life to support the child.'
I am based in South East London and work with clients in person, online and by telephone.
